The Beat Goes On – July Edition

July has a habit of making everything feel a little louder.
The heat, when it arrives, can be draining. The schools start winding towards the summer holidays. Diaries fill up with barbecues, sports days, weekend plans and all the bits of life that seem to gather pace before August finally appears.
There’s a lot to enjoy about July, but it can also feel surprisingly tiring.
Longer days sound lovely in theory, but when you’re already running on empty, more daylight doesn’t always mean more energy. Sometimes it just means there’s more time to feel like you should be doing something.
Which is probably why July is a good month to remember that rest still matters — even in the middle of all the busyness.
You do not have to fill every sunny day
There can be a strange pressure in summer to make the most of everything.
A warm evening becomes a reason to organise something. A dry weekend suddenly feels like it should turn into a full day out. The holidays loom, and everything starts to carry that sense that time needs to be used well.
But not every good-weather day needs to become a plan.
You are allowed to sit in the garden and call it enough. You are allowed to eat outside and leave it at that. You are allowed to say no to things, have a quiet evening, and not feel guilty for wanting a slower pace even when the sun is out.
Sometimes the best way to enjoy July is to leave a bit of room in it.
Look after your energy, not just your time
July often becomes about managing time - fitting things in, planning around holidays, juggling routines, and trying to keep on top of work while everything around it gets busier.
But energy matters just as much.
Hot weather, poor sleep, busy weeks and constant movement can leave you feeling more worn down than you expect. So it’s worth paying attention to the basics: drinking enough water, eating properly, getting outside without overdoing it, and giving yourself a chance to stop before you hit empty.
Sometimes wellbeing in July is less about doing anything special and more about noticing when you need to ease off a bit.
That’s not laziness. That’s common sense.
Food for the soul - July recipe
When it’s warm and nobody wants a heavy dinner, simple food always wins.
This chicken and halloumi couscous bowl is easy, fresh, and feels like summer food without needing loads of effort.
Chicken & Halloumi Couscous Bowl
Serves: 4 | Good for: easy dinner or lunch leftovers
You’ll need
• 200g couscous
• 2 cooked chicken breasts, sliced
• 1 block halloumi, sliced
• 1 cucumber, chopped
• 2 tomatoes, chopped
• 1 red pepper, chopped
• A handful of fresh mint or parsley
• 1 lemon
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• Salt and pepper
How to make it
Put the couscous in a bowl and cover with boiling water according to the packet instructions. Cover and leave for a few minutes, then fluff with a fork.
Fry the halloumi slices in a dry pan until golden on both sides.
In a large bowl, combine the couscous, chicken, cucumber, tomatoes and red pepper.
Add the halloumi, chopped herbs, a squeeze of lemon juice and the olive oil. Season well and mix gently.
Serve warm or cold.
Light, filling, and ideal for the sort of July evening where cooking needs to be quick and uncomplicated.
Local reset - College Lake, Tring, HP23 5QG
If you’re after somewhere peaceful to clear your head this month, College Lake is a lovely option.
It’s got that balance of open space and calm that makes it feel like a genuine break without needing much planning. A gentle walk, a quiet bench, some fresh air and a bit of wildlife is sometimes exactly enough when everything else feels busy.
In July, when the hedgerows are full and everything feels properly summery, it’s the kind of place that helps you slow down without trying too hard.
You don’t need a full day out. Even an hour there can change the tone of your whole week.
As we move through July…
July can be full in every sense of the word.
Full calendars. Full days. Full houses. Full heads.
So if this month feels busy, tiring, or a bit much at times, that doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. It just means life is life, even in sunshine.
Take the easier option when you need to. Drink the cold drink. Sit in the shade. Leave some things for another day. Let a quiet evening be enough.
Summer doesn’t have to be spectacular to still be good.
Small things still count.
Look after yourself this month, and check in on those around you too.
Take care,
On the Beat Team 💙
P.S. July is a good reminder that slowing down is allowed. Not every summer memory needs to be a big one - some of the best are just a drink outside and a bit of peace at the end of the day.
