The Beat Goes On - March Edition

March tends to arrive somewhere between seasons. Winter hasn’t quite finished with us yet, but there are small hints that things are beginning to shift. The mornings start to brighten earlier, the evenings stretch a little longer, and the world slowly feels like it’s waking up again.

It’s a month that can feel a little in-between. The energy of the new year has settled, work continues at its usual pace, and many of us are simply moving through the routine of daily life.

But sometimes March is less about big changes and more about noticing the small ones.

A slightly lighter sky on the drive home. A bit of warmth in the afternoon sun. The first signs that spring might actually be on its way.

Those small shifts often remind us that things do move forward, even when life feels busy or relentless.

Doing something different

As the days slowly start getting longer, March can be a good time to break routine and do something a little different with friends, family, or colleagues.

When work and life are demanding, it’s easy to fall into the same rhythm; home, work, repeat. But even small changes can have a real impact on wellbeing. Meeting up with people, trying something new, or simply sharing an experience together can boost mood, strengthen connections, and give you something to look forward to.

It doesn’t have to be anything complicated.

You could try a local Parkrun one Saturday morning. They take place across the country, are completely free, and you can walk, jog, run, volunteer, or simply go along for the atmosphere. There’s no pressure to perform it’s just about getting outside and being part of something positive.

Or if sport is more your thing, why not gather a few friends or colleagues and head along to watch Great Britain take on Italy in international ice hockey at Planet Ice, Milton Keynes on 30th April.

It’s fast, exciting, and the atmosphere is always brilliant, even if you’ve never watched hockey before.

We currently have discounted tickets available, but these are limited and only available until 15th March, after which tickets will revert to full price through the arena.

Sometimes the best boost for your wellbeing isn’t another task on the list, it’s simply getting out, doing something different, and sharing the moment with others.

Food for the soul - March recipe

As the weather slowly starts to shift, simple meals that don’t require much effort can make all the difference on busy weeks.

This one-tray chicken and roasted veg is ideal for evenings when energy is low but you still want something warm and satisfying.

Everything goes onto one tray, into the oven, and pretty much cooks itself.

Simple One-Tray Chicken & Roasted Veg

Serves: 4 | Good for: leftovers the next day

You’ll need

• 4–6 chicken thighs• 3 potatoes, chopped into chunks• 2 carrots, sliced• 1 red onion, cut into wedges• 1 pepper, chopped• 2 tbsp olive oil• 1 tsp smoked paprika• 1 tsp mixed herbs• Salt & pepper

How to make it

Heat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan).

Put everything on a large baking tray, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with the spices and seasoning, and give it a quick mix so everything is coated.

Roast for 35–40 minutes until the chicken is golden and the vegetables are soft.

Serve as it is, or with a simple salad or crusty bread.

Easy, filling, and minimal washing up — which is sometimes exactly what you need after a long day.

Shift Saver - getting outside, locally

If you’ve got a day off this month, a short walk close to home can still be one of the simplest ways to reset - especially when work has been busy or life feels a little full.

The Ridgeway near Coombe Hill is a brilliant option locally. The paths are open and peaceful, with views across the Chilterns that stretch for miles on a clear day.

It doesn’t need to be a long hike. Even a short wander along the trail, a few deep breaths of fresh air, and stepping away from screens for a while can do wonders for your head.

And if the weather is still doing its usual March thing, remember - fresh air works just as well wrapped in a warm coat with a takeaway coffee.

As we move through March…

There’s no pressure for everything to suddenly feel new again just because spring is approaching.

Energy comes and goes. Motivation wobbles. Life gets busy.

But the days are slowly getting longer, and brighter moments have a way of returning when we least expect them.

Take things at your own pace.Look after yourself where you can.And check in on the people around you too.

Small acts of kindness, including towards yourself ,still matter more than we often realise.

P.S. Why not take some time out at one of our upcoming events - or have a go at building something from the Bucks Brick Borrowers LEGO Library. Sometimes a quiet evening building bricks can be exactly the reset you didn’t realise you needed.
