The Beat Goes On: October Edition

October arrives quietly.

The mornings feel cooler, the evenings grow darker a little earlier each day, and the colours around us begin to change almost overnight.

For many people, October marks the point where autumn truly settles in. The excitement of summer is a distant memory, Christmas still feels a way off, and normal life is firmly back in full swing.

It's also a month that reminds us how important it is to slow down occasionally.

There can be a temptation to power through busy schedules, packed diaries and growing demands at work and home. Yet nature itself is doing the opposite. Trees are shedding leaves, wildlife is preparing for the colder months ahead, and everything seems to move at a gentler pace.

Perhaps there's a lesson in that for all of us.

Embracing the change of season

Change isn't always comfortable.

Lighter evenings disappear, temperatures drop, and motivation can sometimes dip along with them.

But autumn also gives us opportunities that other seasons don't.

It's a chance to enjoy long walks wrapped up against the fresh air. An excuse to spend time with family and friends indoors. A reminder that rest isn't something we've earned after exhaustion - it's something we need throughout the year.

Rather than focusing on what's being lost as summer ends, try focusing on what autumn offers instead.

A little more comfort.

A little more calm.

A little more permission to slow down.

Looking after your wellbeing as the days get shorter

As daylight reduces, it's common for some people to notice changes in mood, energy levels and motivation.

Simple actions can make a real difference:

• Get outside during daylight whenever possible, even if only for a short walk.

• Keep moving. Exercise doesn't need to be intense to improve mood and energy.

• Maintain social connections even when staying in feels easier.

• Stick to regular sleep routines where possible.

• Be kind to yourself if you're feeling tired. Rest is productive too.

Sometimes wellbeing isn't about adding more to our lives.

It's about making space for the things that help us feel at our best.

Local Reset - Hughenden Park, High Wycombe HP13 5NR

If you're looking for somewhere to unwind this month, Hughenden Park offers a fantastic autumn escape.

The park's woodland walks come alive throughout October as the leaves turn shades of gold, orange and red. The rolling landscape provides plenty of opportunities for a gentle walk, a morning run or simply a chance to clear your head after a busy week.

Nearby, Hughenden Manor adds a little local history to the experience, while the surrounding countryside offers some of the most picturesque autumn scenery in Buckinghamshire.

Sometimes wellbeing doesn't require a weekend away.

Sometimes an hour outdoors is exactly what we need.

World Mental Health Day – 10 October

October also includes World Mental Health Day, providing an important reminder that mental wellbeing deserves just as much attention as physical health.

Checking in with ourselves is important.

Checking in with colleagues, friends and family can be even more valuable.

A simple conversation, a quick message or taking the time to ask someone if they're okay can have more impact than we often realise.

You never truly know what someone else may be carrying.

Kindness costs nothing, but it can make all the difference.

Matchday Club – Fresh Air, Family Time & Local Sport

As the weather turns cooler and the football, rugby and ice hockey seasons get into full swing, October is the perfect time to make the most of your Matchday Club benefits.

There's something special about spending an afternoon outdoors supporting a local team. Whether it's cheering from the terraces, sharing a hot drink on a cold afternoon, or introducing children to live sport for the first time, matchdays offer a chance to step away from screens and enjoy quality time together.

Through the Matchday Club, members can access discounted tickets for:

  • Wycombe Wanderers FC

  • MK Dons

  • MK Lightning

  • Chinnor RFC 🏉

Watching live sport isn't just about the result. It's about getting out of the house, supporting local clubs, connecting with your community and spending time with family and friends.

With many fixtures taking place at weekends and during school holidays, why not use your member discounts as an opportunity to plan something a little different this autumn?

Fresh air, local sport, great value and memories that last far longer than the final whistle.

As We Move Through October...

October doesn't ask us to do more.

If anything, it encourages us to do less, but more intentionally.

Take time to notice the changing season.

Look after your health.

Spend time with the people who matter.

Get outside when you can.

And remember that wellbeing isn't built through grand gestures.

It's built through small choices, repeated consistently.

A walk in the fresh air.

A warm meal shared with family.

An early night.

A conversation with a friend.

The little things matter more than we think.

Look after yourselves, and look out for one another.

Take care,

The On the Beat Team 💙

P.S. Autumn is packed with great opportunities to get involved, whether that's discounted tickets, family events, local experiences or simply something different to break up the darker evenings.
