LEGO Ghostbusters Ecto-1: The Build That Ate My Weekend (In the Best Way)

What started as a “quick” project with the kids turned into a full-on LEGO marathon, bag after bag after bag. We tackled the Ghostbusters Ecto-1, and let me tell you—this thing isn’t just a LEGO set; it’s a masterpiece. Also, apparently, it’s a time machine, because I have no idea where the hours went.

The kids were all in, helping (and by helping, I mean stealing pieces I just found in the pile), but honestly, I didn’t mind. The build is so detailed and satisfying that I didn’t even care when I realised I’d been working on one tiny section for way too long.

Then came the part I was dreading: taking it apart. If you’re like me, I expected this to be a total hassle and potentially the first and last time I borrowed a Lego set. But plot twist: it wasn’t! Breaking it down was almost as fun as building it. It was like the ultimate stress relief, and the kids had a blast sorting pieces while I pretended I wasn’t re-checking the instructions like a lunatic.

Oh, and here’s the real benefit: I didn’t even have to pay £209 for this set. Nope! I got to have all the fun of building it with the family for just a tenner. Sure, there was a £20 deposit up front, but I got half of that back when I returned it. So really, I spent less on this than a Domino’s pizza and got hours of mindfulness, family bonding, and, let’s be honest, a couple of very proud moments building an iconic vehicle.

Even better, this is part of a whole new world of 'borrowing' LEGO! Yep, that’s right—you can rent sets like the iconic Concorde, which costs £169 to buy, for just £10. Or maybe you’re more of a Land Rover Defender 90 kind of person? It’s back in stock and available to borrow too! You get the fun of building without the price tag hanging over your head, plus you don’t have to worry about what to do with it afterward (other than maybe proudly display it for a bit).

Overall, 10/10 would recommend. Whether you’re a Ghostbusters fan or just someone looking for an excuse to ignore your phone for a few hours, this is where it’s at. Plus, the kids genuinely loved it, which is a bonus because I totally bought this for them and not at all for me.
