The Beat Goes On - April Edition

April often feels like the month where things start to open up a little.

The darker mornings don’t seem quite so heavy, the evenings begin to stretch out, and there’s a sense that winter is finally starting to loosen its grip. It’s not dramatic, and life doesn’t suddenly become less busy, but there’s often something about April that feels a little lighter.

That doesn’t mean everything instantly feels easier.

Work is still work. Family life is still busy. The to-do list still exists. But brighter days can sometimes give us a bit more space to pause, reset, and take stock of what helps us feel more like ourselves again.

April can be a good reminder that wellbeing doesn’t always have to mean doing more. Sometimes it’s about making small choices that help you feel steadier - getting a bit of fresh air, eating something decent, making time for a change of scene, or simply giving yourself permission to slow down when you need to.

The small things still count.

And often, they’re the things that make the biggest difference.

A change of scene

By April, many of us are ready for a bit of a reset.

Not necessarily a holiday or anything big just something that breaks up the usual rhythm of work, home, repeat. A change of scene, however small, can do a lot for your wellbeing. It gives you something different to focus on, helps clear your head, and often lifts your mood more than you expect.

That might mean heading out for a walk somewhere new, planning a family day out, meeting a friend for coffee, or making the most of a local event.

And sometimes, it’s simply about giving yourself permission to do something enjoyable without feeling like you should be doing something more productive.

If you’re looking for an easy boost this month, try making one plan that gives you something to look forward to even if it’s only something simple.

Because having something in the diary that isn’t work, admin, or another responsibility can make a real difference.

Food for the soul - April recipe

As the days get busier and evenings still feel a bit unpredictable, easy meals that don’t take loads of thought are always a win.

This creamy chicken and bacon pasta is simple, comforting, and ideal for a midweek dinner when energy is low but you still want something warm and filling.

Creamy Chicken & Bacon Pasta

Serves: 4 | Good for: leftovers the next day

You’ll need

• 1 tbsp olive oil• 2 chicken breasts, diced• 6 rashers bacon, chopped• 1 onion, finely diced• 2 garlic cloves, crushed• 250g pasta shapes (penne or fusilli work well)• 200g soft cheese or cream cheese• 50g grated parmesan• A handful of spinach• Salt and pepper

How to make it

Cook the pasta in a pan of boiling water until tender, then drain and set aside.

Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and cook the chicken until browned.

Add the bacon and onion, and cook for a few more minutes until the onion softens and the bacon starts to crisp up.

Stir in the garlic, then add the soft cheese and parmesan. Mix gently until it turns into a creamy sauce. Add a splash of the pasta water if needed to loosen it.

Stir through the spinach until wilted, then add the cooked pasta and mix everything together.

Season to taste and serve.

Simple, filling, and the sort of dinner that feels like a bit of comfort at the end of a long day.

Shift Saver - a simple local reset

If you’ve got a day off this month, getting outside for even half an hour can be a good way to clear your head and recharge.

A simple wander around Wendover Woods is a great option locally. Whether you go for a proper walk, take the kids out for some fresh air, or just grab a coffee and enjoy a slower pace for a while, it’s the kind of place that helps you feel like you’ve had a proper break from the usual rush.

It doesn’t need to be a big plan to have a positive impact.

Fresh air, a bit of movement, and a change of surroundings can sometimes be enough to reset your whole mood.

As we move through April…

There can be a lot of pressure at this time of year to suddenly become more energised, more productive, or to make the most of every brighter day.

But you don’t have to do all that.

It’s enough to notice what helps. To make a little room for rest. To get outside when you can. To take things one week at a time.

The season is changing, slowly but surely.

And that can be your reminder that small shifts still matter.

Look after yourself where you can, and check in on those around you too.

Take care,

On the Beat Team 💙

P.S. Sometimes the best reset is simply doing something enjoyable for a couple of hours whether that’s heading to an event, getting outside, or just switching off with something that helps you unwind.
